I am hovering somewhere over Europe on a plane as I type these lines ((Since I did not have an internet connection on the plane I am posting this from the comfort of my parents’ home.)), heading to Ankara where I will spend the next couple of months writing up my thesis. I could have stayed in Canterbury, which might have made the logistics of things a bit easier, but there is too much fun stuff around which would have made concentrating on writing up quite difficult :)
While technically I am still a student until mid-December, the fact that I’m leaving Canterbury is kind of a big deal for me.
I started my undergraduate course almost exactly seven years ago at the Department of Electronics (it’s not even called that anymore!) and stayed on to do my PhD at the same department, with the same people who have been kind and understanding towards me no matter how silly my queries were. Without the support I have received from the academic and technical teams, I wouldn’t be able to do the things I consider ‘easy’ now and without the support of the admin and clerical staff I would have been running around like a headless chicken for most of the time.
Along the way I have met amazing people, formed life-long friendships and learned much about academic subjects as well as life in general. I studied very hard, spent many sleepless nights working on projects and in fact I was almost living in the lab at some point in my final year, yet I enjoyed every day at the department. I learned, via friends, that the beer I was drinking all along was rubbish and almost became a ‘real ale snob’ :)
Friends, family, academics, that random guy with the funniest beard at the pub – to all those who have crossed my path in the past several years: Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Without you I wouldn’t have been able to achieve as much.
Having said all this, I’d like to point out that this is not a goodbye, I will be back in the UK around January to start an exciting job in London which has ties with the University of Kent so needless to say I will be down once in a while to have a pint of Incubus at The Unicorn. I just had to get this off my chest :)
Until then, cheerio!
